The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays cause serious problems for our skin. And with the ozone layer continuing to thin, sun protection is more important than ever. Doctors recommend that everyone wear sunscreen whenever they spend time outdoors – even on cloudy days, UVB and UVA rays can make it through to your skin. UV rays can contribute to the formation of basal cell carcinoma, melanoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. 

Skin cancer continues to be widespread. Help reduce your risk by covering up with sunscreen and wearing a hat when possible. 


Wearing sunscreen daily is the surest way to reduce signs of aging. You can’t know how much it will benefit you to wear sun protection – 20 years from now, there will be a remarkable difference between your skin and that of your friends who didn’t wear sunscreen. 

Sunscreen will help prevent or reduce the appearance of all of the following:

Sunburns might seem like just a temporary inconvenience. But there’s a lot at risk every time your skin gets burned. The side effects like redness, swelling and peeling are uncomfortable and unappealing. But burns bad enough to cause blistering can cause permanent skin damage. They can also increase your risk of skin cancer. 

Studies have shown that each severe sunburn increases the risk of melanoma – the most serious form of skin cancer. Wear sunscreen to reduce your risk. 


  • You need sun exposure to get adequate vitamin D – Whilst this is certainly true it is still vital that we do not expose unprotected skin for prolonged periods. For those of us in the northern hemisphere a healthy diet rich in vitamin D will also assist in getting sufficient levels of this vitamin. Vitamin D rich foods include fish, milk, dairy, liver and eggs. Furthermore, excessive sun exposure will not produce “extra” vitamin D – getting additional vitamin D above your daily requirement is not beneficial. 
  • All sunscreens are created equal – Make sure your sunscreen is both effective and easy to use. Find the type that works best for your needs. Whether that’s a lotion or a spray. Spray-on sunscreen actually can be more effective because it’s easier to get comprehensive and even coverage, and also allows users to prevent getting their hands greasy. Since those spending a lot of time outdoors and sweating need to reapply every few hours, a spray-on sunscreen can be simpler. 
  • Expired sunscreen will still work – It’s important that you evaluate your old sunscreen before the summer is underway. Expired products are no longer effective, and won’t offer sun protection. Your skin may also become irritated.
